Resources for Families: Safe Firearm Storage Information

Robbinsdale Area Schools (Rdale) is committed to supporting safe and secure environments for all students, both in our schools and beyond.

As part of a statewide effort, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS), has provided school districts with resources to share with families about safe firearm storage practices.

This information is being shared in accordance with a recent statewide directive and is not in response to any specific incident in our school community.

Families can access the full resource below, along with additional information and frequently asked questions through the State of Minnesota:

Firearm-related injuries are a leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States. Research shows that safe storage practices, such as keeping firearms locked, unloaded, and stored separately from ammunition, can significantly reduce the risk of accidental injury, suicide, and unauthorized access.

The one-page resource developed by DPS outlines simple, practical steps families can take, including:

  • Using a gun lock
  • Storing firearms in a locked safe or case
  • Securing ammunition separately
  • Keeping keys or access methods secure

The resource also encourages families to have age-appropriate conversations with children about firearm safety and what to do if they encounter a firearm.

At Rdale, we know that strong schools and strong communities go hand in hand. By sharing clear, practical information, we can work together to support the safety and well-being of all students.
