We want to reaffirm our commitment to each and every student, parent/guardian and staff member: You are valued. You are welcome here. Your children belong in our schools.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

This is a friendly reminder to talk with your students about head lice and the importance of not sharing hats, combs, hair accessories, or any items that come in contact with the head. As we head into the holiday season and spend more time with family and friends, it’s important to be mindful of preventing the spread of lice to our loved ones.

Common symptoms of lice include an itchy scalp and scratch marks behind the ears or at the nape of the neck. Please reassure your students that it’s okay to speak up if they notice any symptoms. Sometimes children may feel anxious or afraid to tell an adult, which can cause lice to spread if it goes undetected.

We encourage you to check your student’s head regularly—especially if you notice symptoms. If you do discover lice in your household, over-the-counter treatments can be effective. It’s important to remove all nits (eggs) from the hair, as they can hatch and prolong exposure. Washing bedding, clothing, and outerwear, then drying on high heat, can also help eliminate lice. Stuffed animals should be sealed in a bag for several days.

Please feel free to reach out to the health office for additional resources. You may also contact your family practitioner or pediatrician for guidance.

For more information, please see the notification letter from Hennepin County.
